Renovations and construction to the campus of over $120 million completed in 2012 provided a new cafeteria, auditorium, emergency department, pharmacy, primary care and blind rehabilitation services. Specialized services include the Nation’s largest Spinal Cord Injury Center, The Department of Veteran Affairs, Major Charles R. Soltes, Jr. O.D., Blind Rehabilitation Center, one of only 13 such Centers in the Country, in-patient and out-patient mental health facilities, research facilities, radiation oncology, and surgical services, a state of the art gait lab and the only Spinal Cordy Injury Long Term Care Bed unit west of the Mississippi. The VA Long Beach is also distinctive in academic affiliations that includes training the newest generation of health care providers; nurses, physicians, prosthetics and mental health workers.

The VA Long Beach Medical Center campus was formerly the home of a US Navy hospital and was turned over to the VA around 1950. Some of the buildings on campus date back to the 1940s and are gradually being replaced due to seismic deficiencies and growth in demand for services.

Known as one of the most diversified tertiary health care providers in the Department of Veterans Affairs, the VA Long Beach Healthcare System encompasses over 400 beds on its 100-acre campus in Long Beach and is the health care provider of choice for over 56,000 unique Veterans. The System includes satellite clinics for outpatient Primary Care and various specialty services located in Santa Ana, Laguna Hills, Santa Fe Springs, Anaheim and the Villages at Cabrillo.  


Uniquely located in southernmost Los Angeles County the VA Long Beach Healthcare System serves Veterans throughout Southern California. The 710 and 210 Freeways and the borders of Riverside and San Diego Counties gives a rough approximation of its regional service footprint; although patients travel to Long Beach for special services from around the entire Country.
